Older Adults MOT

If you have a specific complaint you would like us to assess, book in for our 60 minute initial assessment, regardless of age. The older adults MOT is a longer appointment (up to 90 minutes) where we assess more than your area of concern, a much broader assessment checking key areas of physical health relevant to the older adult that you may not have symptoms relating to, but can have a big impact on quality of life and longevity.

The Older Adult MOT

At Optimum Chiropractic Clinic we believe in the value of pursuing good physical health throughout a lifespan, promoting successful ageing. Maintaining physical fitness helps to preserve independence and reduce the risk of illness from various chronic diseases. Having adequate strength, flexibility and endurance is important to completing everyday tasks, and assessing for and addressing deficits in these areas is vital to prevent serious limitations.

Falls are one of the major health problems affecting the quality of life in older adults. They can lead to significant injuries, fear of future falls, and a decline in physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Fortunately there are factors that we can address that reduce the risk of falls occurring as well as improve the ability to get up after falling.

Many chronic illnesses do not present with symptoms until a complication occurs or they are more advanced. There are a variety of factors and tests that can be screened for in the setting of a chiropractic clinic. Interventions can be put in place or referrals can be made to ensure the right care is received.

Our older adult MOT helps screen, identify, and appropriately manage the various factors that can impact the longevity and quality of life of the older adult, or just provide reassurance that the body is functioning well.

You do not need to have any symptoms to book in for our older adult MOT. There is no age restriction on this appointment. If you feel your physical health is not what it used to be, or you are just interested in seeing how well you are functioning, the older adult MOT is for you.

Key Components

History

A comprehensive history is taken that covers past and present medical conditions and medications, family medical history, and risk factors that assess areas such as bone and cardiovascular health.

Vital signs

An assessment of the four main vital signs: blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature.

Balance tests

A variety of static and dynamic balance tests are conducted, of progressing difficulty, to assess neurological function and postural stability.

Mobility tests

An assessment of the quality and range of movement available at the main joints around the body necessary for activities of daily living such as climbing stairs or getting up from the floor.

Strength and endurance tests

Tests to look at the strength and endurance of the muscles around the body that enable everyday independence such as the ability to carry shopping or get out of a chair.

Neurological tests

An in-depth look at the functioning of the nervous system. A battery of tests focusing on the brain, brainstem, spinal cord and peripheral nerves to screen for medical conditions that may require onward referral.
